Traditional Games & Activities to Experience During Kaamatan Harvest Festival
Kaamatan isn't only about food and pageants — the harvest festival's traditional games bring the culture to life. Expect a tug-of-war test of teamwork called Migayat Lukug, a slingshot-and-clay-pellet game called Melastik, and Magunatip, where dancers step between rhythmically clapping bamboo poles. The festivities run through May, with the biggest crowds at KDCA Penampang for the finale on 30–31 May.

How Local Communities Are Protecting Mantanani's Reefs
Mantanani's reefs took years of damage from fish-bombing and unmanaged tourist traffic, but community-led programmes have cut destructive fishing incidents dramatically and trained island residents — many of them women — to run homestays and guide visitors responsibly. Sabah Parks and local conservation groups are now working toward joint management of the islands so tourism and reef health can hold together long-term.
